Messier 99<\/strong> or M99<\/strong>, also known as NGC 4254<\/strong> or St. Catherine’s Wheel<\/strong>, is a grand design spiral galaxy<\/a> in the northern constellation<\/a> Coma Berenices<\/a> approximately 15,000,000 parsecs<\/a> (49,000,000 light-years<\/a>) from the Milky Way<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> It was discovered by Pierre M\u00e9chain<\/a> on 17 March 1781. The discovery was then reported to Charles Messier<\/a>, who included the object in the Messier Catalogue<\/a> of comet-like objects. It was one of the first galaxies in which a spiral pattern was seen. This pattern was first identified by Lord Rosse<\/a> in the spring of 1846.[10]<\/a>[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
