The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebula\">nebula<\/a> may have formed through <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_formation#Cloud_collapse\">hierarchical collapse<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2174#cite_note-Coteraetal2006-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.721), 22px);\">There is some equivocation in the use of the identifiers NGC 2174 and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2175\">NGC 2175<\/a>. These may apply to the entire nebula, to its brightest knot, or to the star cluster it includes. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Burnham_Jr.#Burnham's_Celestial_Handbook\">Burnham&#8217;s Celestial Handbook<\/a><\/em> lists the entire nebula as 2174\/2175 and does not mention the star cluster.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2174#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The NGC Project (working from the original descriptive notes) assigns NGC 2174 to the prominent knot at J2000 06<sup>h<\/sup> 09<sup>m<\/sup> 23.7<sup>s<\/sup>, +20\u00b0&nbsp;39\u2032&nbsp;34\u2033 and NGC 2175 to the entire nebula, and by extension to the star cluster.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2174#cite_note-ngcProject-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SIMBAD\">SIMBAD<\/a> uses NGC 2174 for the nebula and NGC 2175 for the star cluster.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2174#cite_note-simbad-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> <sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2174#cite_note-simbad2175-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.721), 22px);\">Glowing gas and dark dust do not survive well in the Monkey Head Nebula.
