NGC 925<\/strong> is a barred spiral galaxy<\/a> located about 30[4]<\/a><\/sup> million light-years<\/a> away in the constellation Triangulum<\/a>. German-British<\/a> astronomer William Herschel<\/a> discovered this galaxy on 13 September 1784.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morphological classification<\/a> of this galaxy is SB(s)d,[3]<\/a><\/sup> indicating that it has a bar structure<\/a> and loosely wound spiral arms with no ring.[7]<\/a><\/sup> The spiral arm to the south is stronger than the northern arm, with the latter appearing flocculent<\/a> and less coherent. The bar is offset from the center of the galaxy and is the site of star formation all along its length. Both of these morphological traits\u2014a dominant spiral arm and the offset bar\u2014are typically characteristics of a Magellanic spiral<\/a> galaxy.[8]<\/a><\/sup> The galaxy is inclined at an angle of 55\u00b0 to the line of sight along a position angle<\/a> of 102\u00b0.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NGC 925 is a member of the NGC 1023 Group<\/a>, a nearby, gravitationally-bound<\/a> group of galaxies<\/a> associated with NGC 1023<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> However, the nearest member lies at least 650,000 ly (200,000 pc) distant from NGC 925. There is a 10 million solar mass<\/a> (M<\/var>\u2609<\/sub><\/a>) cloud of neutral hydrogen<\/a> attached to NGC 925 by a streamer. It is uncertain whether this is a satellite dwarf galaxy<\/a>, the remnant of a past tidal interaction<\/a>, or a cloud of primordial gas.[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although no supernovae<\/a> have been observed in NGC 925 yet, a luminous red nova<\/a>, designated AT 2023nzt (type LRN, mag. 19), was discovered on 26 July 2023.[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
