He mistook it as a double <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebula\">nebula<\/a>, as did subsequent observers, and it wasn&#8217;t until the nineteenth century that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_Earl_of_Rosse\">Third Earl of Rosse<\/a> resolved into a spiral form.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-OMeara2007-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Louis_Emil_Dreyer\">J. L. E. Dreyer<\/a> assigned it the identifiers 2903 and 2905 in his <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_General_Catalogue\">New General Catalogue<\/a><\/em>; NGC 2905 now designates a luminous knot in the northeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiral_arm\">spiral arm<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-Moore2010-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.721), 22px);\">This <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Field_galaxy\">field galaxy<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-1979A&amp;A....74..235M-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup> is located about 30<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-Tully2016-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;million <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year\">light-years<\/a> away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milky_Way\">Milky Way<\/a>, and is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgo_Supercluster\">Virgo Supercluster<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-ipac-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxy_morphological_classification\">morphological classification<\/a> of this galaxy is SBbc,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2903#cite_note-Ann2015-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> indicating a barred spiral (SB) with moderate to tightly-wound spiral arms (bc). <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G%C3%A9rard_de_Vaucouleurs\">De Vaucouleurs<\/a> and associates assigned it the class SAB(rs)bc, suggesting a weaker bar structure (SAB) with a partial ring (rs). The bar structure appears stronger in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Near_infrared\">near infrared<\/a> band.
