NGC 2841<\/strong> is an unbarred spiral galaxy<\/a> in the northern circumpolar constellation<\/a> of Ursa Major<\/a>. It was discovered on 9 March, 1788 by German-born astronomer William Herschel<\/a>. J. L. E. Dreyer<\/a>, the author of the New General Catalogue<\/a><\/em>, described it as, “very bright, large, very much extended 151\u00b0, very suddenly much brighter middle equal to 10th magnitude star”.[7]<\/a><\/sup> Initially thought to be about 30 million light-years<\/a> distant, a 2001 Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> survey of the galaxy’s Cepheid variables<\/a> determined its distance to be approximately 14.1 megaparsecs<\/a> or 46 million light-years.[4]<\/a><\/sup> The optical size of the galaxy is 8.1\u2032 \u00d7 3.5\u2032.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the prototype for the flocculent spiral galaxy<\/a>,[5]<\/a><\/sup> a type of spiral galaxy whose arms are patchy and discontinuous.[8]<\/a><\/sup> The morphological class<\/a> is SAa, indicating a spiral galaxy with no central bar and very tightly-wound arms<\/a>. There is no grand design structure<\/a> visible in the optical band<\/a>, although some inner spiral arms can be seen in the near infrared<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> It is inclined by an angle of 68\u00b0 to the line of sight<\/a> from the Earth, with the major axis<\/a> aligned along a position angle<\/a> of 148\u00b0.[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The properties of NGC 2841 are similar to those of the Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup> It is home to a large population of young blue stars<\/a>, and a few H II regions<\/a>.[9]<\/a><\/sup> The luminosity of the galaxy is 2\u00d71010<\/sup> L<\/em>\u2609<\/sub><\/a> and it has a combined mass of 7\u00d71010<\/sup> M<\/em>\u2609<\/sub><\/a>.[6]<\/a><\/sup> Its disk of stars can be traced out to a radius of around 228 kly<\/a> (70 kpc<\/a>). This disk begins to warp at a radius of around 98 kly (30 kpc), suggesting the perturbing effect of in-falling matter from the surrounding medium.[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
