It was discovered on 9 March, 1788 by German-born astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Herschel\">William Herschel<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Louis_Emil_Dreyer\">J. L. E. Dreyer<\/a>, the author of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_General_Catalogue\">New General Catalogue<\/a><\/em>, described it as, &#8220;very bright, large, very much extended 151\u00b0, very suddenly much brighter middle equal to 10th magnitude star&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-csel-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup> Initially thought to be about 30 million <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year\">light-years<\/a> distant, a 2001 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hubble_Space_Telescope\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> survey of the galaxy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cepheid_variable\">Cepheid variables<\/a> determined its distance to be approximately 14.1 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megaparsec\">megaparsecs<\/a> or 46 million light-years.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Cepheids-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The optical size of the galaxy is 8.1\u2032 \u00d7 3.5\u2032.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Kaneda2007-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.721), 22px);\">This is the prototype for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flocculent_spiral_galaxy\">flocculent spiral galaxy<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Zhang2018-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> a type of spiral galaxy whose arms are patchy and discontinuous.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Elmegreen-1981-CH3-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxy_morphological_classification\">morphological class<\/a> is SAa, indicating a spiral galaxy with no central bar and very tightly-wound <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spiral_arm\">arms<\/a>. There is no <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_design_spiral_galaxy\">grand design structure<\/a> visible in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Optical_band\">optical band<\/a>, although some inner spiral arms can be seen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Near_infrared\">near infrared<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Zhang2018-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> It is inclined by an angle of 68\u00b0 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Line-of-sight_propagation\">line of sight<\/a> from the Earth, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_axis\">major axis<\/a> aligned along a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Position_angle\">position angle<\/a> of 148\u00b0.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Zhang2018-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);font-size:clamp(14.642px, 0.915rem + ((1vw - 3.2px) * 0.721), 22px);\">The properties of NGC 2841 are similar to those of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andromeda_Galaxy\">Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Cepheids-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> It is home to a large population of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OB_star\">young blue stars<\/a>, and a few <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H_II_region\">H II regions<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Marochnik1995-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> The luminosity of the galaxy is 2\u00d710<sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_luminosity\"><em>L<\/em><sub>\u2609<\/sub><\/a> and it has a combined mass of 7\u00d710<sup>10<\/sup>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_mass\"><em>M<\/em><sub>\u2609<\/sub><\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_2841#cite_note-Kaneda2007-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> Its disk of stars can be traced out to a radius of around 228&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year#Definitions\">kly<\/a> (70&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parsec#Parsecs_and_kiloparsecs\">kpc<\/a>).
