Messier 100<\/strong> (also known as NGC 4321<\/strong> or the Mirror Galaxy<\/strong>) is a grand design<\/a> intermediate spiral galaxy<\/a> in the southern part of the mildly northern<\/a> Coma Berenices<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> It is one of the brightest and largest galaxies in the Virgo Cluster<\/a> and is approximately 55 million light-years<\/a>[3]<\/a><\/sup> from our galaxy<\/a>, about 166,000 light-years in diameter. It was discovered by Pierre M\u00e9chain<\/a> in 1781[a]<\/a><\/sup> and 29 days later seen again and entered by Charles Messier<\/a> in his catalogue<\/a> “of nebulae and star clusters”.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> It was one of the first spiral galaxies to be discovered,[7]<\/a><\/sup> and was listed as one of fourteen spiral nebulae<\/a> by Lord William Parsons of Rosse<\/a> in 1850. NGC 4323<\/a> and NGC 4328<\/a> are satellite galaxies<\/a> of M100; the former is connected with it by a bridge of luminous matter.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
