It is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgo_II_Groups\">Virgo II Groups<\/a>, a series of galaxies and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxy_cluster\">galaxy clusters<\/a> strung out from the southern edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgo_Supercluster\">Virgo Supercluster<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sombrero_Galaxy#cite_note-atlas_universe-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> It has an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxy#Isophotal_diameter\">isophotal diameter<\/a> of approximately 29.09 to 32.32 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parsec#Parsecs_and_kiloparsecs\">kiloparsecs<\/a> (94,900 to 105,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year\">light-years<\/a>),<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sombrero_Galaxy#cite_note-ned-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> making it slightly bigger in size than the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milky_Way\">Milky Way<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has a bright nucleus, an unusually large central bulge, and a prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dust_lane\">dust lane<\/a> in its outer disk, which from Earth is viewed almost edge-on. The dark dust lane and the bulge give it the appearance of a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sombrero\">sombrero<\/a> hat (thus the name).
