The Pinwheel Galaxy<\/strong> (also known as Messier 101<\/strong>, M101<\/strong> or NGC 5457<\/strong>) is a face-on, counterclockwise Intermediate spiral galaxy<\/a> located 21 million light-years<\/a> (6.4 megaparsecs<\/a>)[4]<\/a><\/sup> from Earth in the constellation<\/a> Ursa Major<\/a>. It was discovered by Pierre M\u00e9chain<\/a> in 1781[a]<\/a><\/sup> and was communicated that year to Charles Messier<\/a>, who verified its position for inclusion in the Messier Catalogue<\/a><\/em> as one of its final entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M101 is a large galaxy, with a diameter of 252,000 light-years. By comparison, the Milky Way<\/a> has a diameter of 87,400 light-years.[12]<\/a><\/sup> It has around a trillion stars.[13]<\/a><\/sup> It has a disk mass on the order of 100 billion solar masses, along with a small central bulge of about 3 billion solar masses.[14]<\/a><\/sup> Its characteristics can be compared to those of Andromeda Galaxy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
