It was discovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_M%C3%A9chain\">Pierre M\u00e9chain<\/a> in 1781<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinwheel_Galaxy#cite_note-9\">[a]<\/a><\/sup> and was communicated that year to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Messier\">Charles Messier<\/a>, who verified its position for inclusion in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Messier_Catalogue\">Messier Catalogue<\/a><\/em> as one of its final entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M101 is a large galaxy, with a diameter of 252,000 light-years.
