German-born astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Herschel\">William Herschel<\/a> included his sister&#8217;s discovery in his catalog, and labelled it H VIII.77. The nebula is known as S&nbsp;142 in the 1959 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sharpless_catalog\">Sharpless catalog<\/a> (Sh2-142).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_7380#cite_note-Chen2011-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> It is extremely difficult to observe visually, usually requiring very dark skies and an O-III filter. The NGC 7380 complex is located at a distance of approximately 8.5 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year#Definitions\">kilolight-years<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sun\">Sun<\/a>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Perseus_Arm\">Perseus Arm<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milky_Way\">Milky Way<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_7380#cite_note-Chen2011-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cluster spans ~20 light-years (6&nbsp;pc) with an elongated shape and an extended tail.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_7380#cite_note-Chen2011-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> Age estimates range from 4<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_7380#cite_note-Chen2011-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> to 11.9<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_7380#cite_note-Wu2009-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;million years. At the center of the cluster lies <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DH_Cephei\">DH Cephei<\/a>, a close, double-lined <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spectroscopic_binary\">spectroscopic binary<\/a> system consisting of two massive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O-type_star\">O-type stars<\/a>.
