At a distance of about 444 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light-year\">light-years<\/a>, it is among the nearest <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_cluster\">star clusters<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth\">Earth<\/a> and the nearest <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Messier_object\">Messier object<\/a> to Earth, being the most obvious star cluster to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naked_eye\">naked eye<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Night_sky\">night sky<\/a>. It contains the reflection nebulae <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_1432\">NGC 1432<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HII_region\">HII region<\/a>,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_1435\">NGC 1435<\/a>, known as the Merope Nebula. Around 2330 BC the Pleiades marked the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vernal_point\">vernal point<\/a>. Due to the brightness of its stars, the Pleiades is viewable from most areas on Earth, even in locations with significant <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Light_pollution\">light pollution<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cluster is dominated by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OB_star\">hot blue luminous stars<\/a> that have formed within the last 100 million years. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reflection_nebula\">Reflection nebulae<\/a> around the brightest stars were once thought to be leftover material from their formation, but are now considered likely to be an unrelated dust cloud in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interstellar_medium\">interstellar medium<\/a> through which the stars are currently passing.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-Gibson2003-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup> This dust cloud is estimated to be moving at a speed of approximately 18&nbsp;km\/s relative to the stars in the cluster.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Computer simulations have shown that the Pleiades were probably formed from a compact configuration that once resembled the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orion_Nebula\">Orion Nebula<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-Kroupa2001-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup> Astronomers estimate that the cluster will survive for approximately another 250 million years, after which the clustering will be lost due to gravitational interactions with the galactic neighborhood.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pleiades#cite_note-Gendler2006-15\">[15]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with the open star cluster of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyades_(star_cluster)\">Hyades<\/a>, the Pleiades form the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Gate_of_the_Ecliptic\">Golden Gate of the Ecliptic<\/a>.
