It was discovered by William Herschel<\/a> on October 6, 1784.[3]<\/a><\/sup> The galaxy is a member of the NGC 1023 group<\/a> of galaxies<\/a> in the Local Supercluster<\/a>. It has an H II<\/a> nucleus.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGC 891 looks as the Milky Way<\/a> would look like when viewed edge-on (some astronomers have even noted how similar to NGC 891 our galaxy looks as seen from the Southern Hemisphere<\/a>[9]<\/a><\/sup>) and, in fact, both galaxies are considered very similar in terms of luminosity and size;[10]<\/a><\/sup> studies of the dynamics of its molecular hydrogen<\/a> have also proven the likely presence of a central bar<\/a>.[11]<\/a><\/sup> Despite this, recent high-resolution images of its dusty disk show unusual filamentary patterns. These patterns are extending into the halo<\/a> of the galaxy, away from its galactic disk<\/a>. Scientists presume that supernova explosions caused this interstellar dust to be thrown out of the galactic disk toward the halo.[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NGC 891 appears alongside M67<\/a>, the Sombrero Galaxy<\/a>(M104), the Pinwheel Galaxy<\/a>(M101), NGC 5128<\/a>, NGC 1300<\/a>, M81<\/a>, and the Andromeda Galaxy<\/a> in the end credits of the Outer Limits<\/em><\/a> TV series, which is why it is occasionally called the Outer Limits Galaxy<\/strong>.[17]<\/a>[1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
