It was discovered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Herschel\">William Herschel<\/a> on October 6, 1784.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_891#cite_note-Seligman-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup> The galaxy is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_1023_Group\">NGC 1023 group<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galaxies\">galaxies<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_Supercluster\">Local Supercluster<\/a>. It has an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H_II_region\">H II<\/a> nucleus.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_891#cite_note-hoetal1997-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-transform:none\">NGC 891 looks as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milky_Way\">Milky Way<\/a> would look like when viewed edge-on (some astronomers have even noted how similar to NGC 891 our galaxy looks as seen from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Hemisphere\">Southern Hemisphere<\/a><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_891#cite_note-Kruit-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>) and, in fact, both galaxies are considered very similar in terms of luminosity and size;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_891#cite_note-Karachentsev2004-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> studies of the dynamics of its molecular <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydrogen\">hydrogen<\/a> have also proven the likely presence of a central <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barred_spiral_galaxy\">bar<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NGC_891#cite_note-GB1995-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> Despite this, recent high-resolution images of its dusty disk show unusual filamentary patterns. These patterns are extending into the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galactic_halo\">halo<\/a> of the galaxy, away from its <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galactic_disk\">galactic disk<\/a>.
